You know how [livejournal.com profile] diceytillerman and I are always talking about the beauty of criticism and deconstruction?

This is what we are talking about:

comic, transcript below

Girl 1: "The problem with scientists is that you take the wonder and beauty out of everything by trying to analyze it."
Girl 2, from offscreen: "DUDE!"
Girl 2, running onscreen: "My plasmodial slime molds have heightened pigment production! Check out that yellow color! That actually makes them zinc-resistant. Amazing, huh?"
Girl 1: "It looks like dog barf."
Girl 2: "Hah, yeah! F.Septica is nicknamed 'dog vomit slime mold.' Cool, huh?Check out my slides!"
Girl 1: "Okay, never mind: what's wrong with scientists is that you do see wonder and beauty in everything. Oh God, it's moving!"
Girl 2: "It wants to hug you! So cute!"

Mouseover text: "The best hugs are probably from hagfish, which can extrude microscopic filaments to convert a huge volume of water around them to slime in second. Instant cozy blanket!"

(There was a time I used to apologize for being enthusiastic about stuff. Then I fell in with people who were unreservedly enthusiastic about stuff. Best thing that ever happened to me :-))

Yes, that was pretty awesome. I wish I'd had that comic in college to hand out as an answer to people like "Girl 1". Or had thought to say "Does deconstructing a novel make you enjoy it less?"

Gnomic Utterances. These are traditional, and are set at the head of each section of the Guidebook. The reason for them is lost in the mists of History. They are culled by the Management from a mighty collection of wise sayings probably compiled by a SAGE—probably called Ka’a Orto’o—some centuries before the Tour begins. The Rule is that no Utterance has anything whatsoever to do with the section it precedes. Nor, of course, has it anything to do with Gnomes.
