deborah: the Library of Congress cataloging numbers for children's literature, technology, and library science (Default)

A spinoff group (which looks like it might not involve Stallman) seems to be forming, and I've put in my word to be a part of that. So we'll see what happens.

It's interesting watching how much the fanaticism of the FSF is helping the group sideline itself. Last year at a conference, I watched a FSF member give a talk bemoaning the fact that they can't get anyone to join Emacs development anymore and heartily encouraging all his listeners to contribute to Emacs, all completely oblivious of all of the reasons why lively Emacs development might not be an appropriate place to be funneling youthful development efforts in 2010.

Gnomic Utterances. These are traditional, and are set at the head of each section of the Guidebook. The reason for them is lost in the mists of History. They are culled by the Management from a mighty collection of wise sayings probably compiled by a SAGE—probably called Ka’a Orto’o—some centuries before the Tour begins. The Rule is that no Utterance has anything whatsoever to do with the section it precedes. Nor, of course, has it anything to do with Gnomes.
