Engagement isn't there for your benefit.
My husband, like me, is probably autistic. But he has the presentation where human interaction is generally both unrewarding and fraught with anxiety. He doesn't eat food with other people, including me, unless he is performing friendship, which he does less and less these days. FB, tumblr, twitter - none of those hold any meaning for him. But you can't have a society made up people like my husband. You can't have a society if none of it's members rely emotionally on other people for validation and connection- and engagement is a huge part of that mechanism for connection.
