a dichotomy I thought at first was being constructed: the essential statement of the heterosexual romance is the explicit statement of love, and the essential statement of the homosexual romance is coming out of the closet

Even if that wasn't her point, it's an interesting idea. Does the explicit statement of love in het romance tend to come at about the same point in the plot arc, timewise, as the coming out moment in homosexual romance?
